GLOBAL SWITCH: ETDE TO BUILD LARGEST DATA CENTER IN FRANCE

ETDE, Bouygues Construction’s electrical contracting and maintenance subsidiary, has won a contract for data center in association with ETDE representative Brézillon. Work is already underway on a new data center located in Clichy in the outskirts of Paris, to be completed by September 2011. On behalf of the UK operator Global Switch, ETDE is set to deliver a series of work packages in the areas of electricity, air conditioning, and safety and security. Global Switch has been a provider of secure infrastructure for electronic data storage since 1998. This latest success confirms ETDE’s position in the French data center market. With one of the world’s most reliable electricity networks, France plays ideal host to such facilities, and ETDE has succeeded in acquiring numerous references in the data center market over the last three years.

Almost 10,000 m² of Customer Space
The existing Global Switch Data Center, built in 2001, is the largest in France. The new Data Center is an extension of the present structure, and will feature almost 10,000 m² of customer rooms, covering a total floor surface area of 16,400 m² over seven levels, including two underground levels. In the initial phase of the contract, ETDE is to install electrical and air conditioning systems in 5,000 m² of customer rooms over three levels, and will build all the technical rooms and vertical columns. The key features of this phase in final configuration are:

  • Air conditioning: 15 cooling units supply chilled water for circulation; approximately 200 air conditioning units regulate the air in the customer rooms,
  • Electricity: 6 electrical generator units provide high voltage power supply and a stand-by generator; 10 units generate high quality uninterruptible power supply; and low voltage power is supplied to all rooms. The total installed capacity amounts to almost 40,000 KW.

All facilities are designed and operated to constantly guarantee uninterrupted service in any scenario.

ETDE and Data Centers: All-Round Reliability
With banks, telecoms operators and industrial groups among the wide range of customers entrusting storage of their confidential data to the Data Centers, the electronic data storage facilities run by Global Switch need to be extremely reliable, reducing the risk of data loss to a minimum.

Redundancy in terms of power supply is a key technique employed by ETDE to ensure the data centers remain fully operational. ETDE also operates state-of-the-art cooling systems to maintain the electrical systems at optimal temperature.

ETDE uses multiple low voltage networks to guarantee maximum security of data. With systems allocated to fire detection and protection, water detection, access control, CCTV monitoring and intruder detection, each facility becomes a Fort Knox for electronic data.

ETDE: Comprehensive Data Center Solutions
In association with fellow Bouygues Construction subsidiary Brézillon, ETDE offers comprehensive data center solutions. Areas of competence extend to drafting of the operating plan and specifications, design, financial engineering (including location investigation and property development contracts), construction and maintenance. For the Global Switch project, Brézillon is tasked with the structural work, roads and services and secondary trades such as false ceilings and floor coverings, while ETDE is to deliver the entire series of work packages.
